The Week at Deep-Dish Life: Octavia’s Visit

Just a couple of weeks ago, I was pretty sure winter was on its way out and spring was surely just around the corner. One of the crazy things about life here is that you never know from day-to-day or hour-to-hour even what the weather will do. Within the course of 24 hours this past week, we went from enjoying the sun and spring-like conditions to snow, thanks to winter storm Octavia. We didn’t get much snow, just a couple of inches, and it was really a more of a wintry mix – rain, sleet and snow. But it was cold, very cold (and still is!)

With the snow and cold coming on, we ramped up on the birdseed. Cardinals, Sparrows, Juncos, Starlings, and even a Wood-thrush came to pay numerous visits.  They bring so much color and activity to even the most cold and dreary winter days!

While walking this week, I discovered one of the things I really appreciate about Winter. I enjoy being able to see through the woods, to the underlying structure of the forests. Sure, the lush of spring and summer are fabulous, but the bareness of winter makes me really appreciate the supporting structures of these forests. Not to mention, it’s a great time for B&W photography!

Well, that’s it for this week. We expect to get another winter storm at the end of this coming week. After that, maybe we will be blessed to see the sun again meanwhile continuing to wish for Spring! Hope you have a great week.
